Fingers crossed your company was not been affected by the recent ‘WannaCry’ ransomware attack which was first discovered on Friday 12th May 2017.

What is WannaCry?

WannaCry is a ransomware attack currently affecting Windows machines that are not patched with the latest operating system updates from Microsoft.

It has been reported that an estimated 300,000 computers in more than 150 countries have been infected. The virus holds the infected computer hostage and demands that the victim pay a ransom in order to regain access to the files on their computer.

European countries were hit the hardest, affecting several leading telecommunication companies, banks, hospitals, and government agencies.

Should we be surprised?

Only in April this year the BBC reported that ‘ransomware attacks around the world [grew] by 50%’. WannaCry has escalated this further, and no doubt the next cyber-attack could be just around the corner.
