VMware's New Licencing Model

With the introduction of VMware vSphere 5, VMware is evolving the product's licencing model to give customers the opportunity to move to a more cloud-like, "pay for consumption" approach to IT. The changes lay the foundation for a more modern IT cost model that is based on consumption and value rather than components and capacity.

vSphere has made it possible for customers to maximise hardware utilisation and efficiency through pooling. With these licensing changes, VMware is extending this concept from technology to the business of IT. The new vSphere licensing model eliminates the restrictive physical entitlements of CPU cores and physical RAM per server, replacing them with a single virtualisation-based entitlement of pooled virtual memory (vRAM). This will simplify the process of purchasing deploying and managing vSphere while facilitating the move to shared infrastructure as a service.

Backup - Technology Choices

As an increasing number of IT organisations look to replace tape,
the leading alternatives include:

1. replacing an old tape library with a newer one,
2. using straight disk, fronting a tape library,
3. using a cloud-based backup service,
4. using data deduplication backup software or a disk-based backup appliance.
