Are you actually using all the software licences you paid for?
Licences you own but which are not deployed still attract support and maintenance fees. Over time, these fees can easily mount up to significant amounts - money that could easily be directed to more immediate uses. At Trustco we can help you to audit your environment and work out where you can make savings. See this page http://www.trustco.co.uk/products/licensing/default.asp for further information.
How much did you pay for each incident you raised with your suppliers?
A standard 20% maintenance contract may seem reasonable, but if you only raised four incidents then the unit cost often seems much too high. Collecting these statistics for all products you use and analysing the data across your complete environment will give an insight into the value for money you are actually achieving. This all makes good supporting material for a contract re-negotiation.
Work with your supplier
If your account manager knows beforehand that you are not satisfied with your current agreement they will be happy to work with you to find a mutually suitable solution. Given notice your supplier has the time and opportunity to work out a deal that is good for you both.
Look into your software support and maintenance options
Rather than sticking with the status quo, it makes sense to assess alternatives such as renegotiating your existing contracts, contracting with a third party or using alternative products. If there is no requirement to upgrade then a third party maintenance solution may be significantly more cost-effective.
Do all users need all functionality?
Is there a place for software that does not come with the full functionality of the product? If groups of users can be identified who only use a core subset of funtionality then why pay for features that they will never use?
