Growing data stock-pile? Backup windows shrinking? Thought about Virtual Tape Libraries? Virtual Tape Libraries (VTLs) are disk-based systems that emulate tape technology. De-duplication software, available on some VTLs, means that using disks for long-term data backup storage becomes economically viable. Why should you care about VTLs? Faster backup and restore Takes up less physical space than tape Significantly reduces power consumption Lowers security and other operating and infrastructure costs Decreases workload while increasing reliability

Data de-duplication changes the economics - the cost of backing up to a VTL becomes significantly less expensive than just disk-based data-protection solutions.

VMware To Embed Intrusion Prevention Technologies

Gartner expects VMware to embed Determina's intrusion prevention technologies into ESX and extend the protection to hosted workloads. This deal raises the bar for security capabilities in hypervisors and virtualised workloads.

Gartner believes VMware will embed both Determina Memory Firewall and its hot patching technology. The analyst does not view this as VMware entering the "security market,". Rather, the acquisition raises the bar for the security capabilities of hypervisors and virtualised workloads.
